Root Canal Treatment in Connelly Springs & Rutherford College, NC

Root canals have an unfair reputation. The procedure does not cause pain, it relieves it. The real pain comes from the infection inside the tooth, and a root canal removes that infection, ends the pain, and saves a tooth that would otherwise be lost. At Western Piedmont Dental, serving Connelly Springs and Rutherford College, NC, we make the experience far more comfortable than most patients expect.

Why Root Canals

A root canal saves a tooth that would otherwise be lost.

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, containing the nerve and blood supply. When decay, a crack, or trauma lets bacteria reach the pulp, it becomes infected and inflamed, causing significant pain and, if ignored, spreading infection into the surrounding bone.

A root canal removes that infected pulp, cleans and seals the inside of the tooth, and lets you keep your natural tooth rather than extracting it. Saving the natural tooth is almost always better than removing it, your own tooth functions better than any replacement and keeps your bite and bone intact.

A gentle, unhurried approach that prioritizes your comfort and saves your natural tooth.

Comfort-Focused Technique

We take the time to fully numb the tooth and never rush. We check in throughout and pause the moment you need us to. Most patients leave saying it was easier than a filling.

Save The Natural Tooth

Our goal is always to preserve your own tooth where it is biologically possible. A saved natural tooth outperforms any replacement and protects your bite and bone.

Award-Winning Dentist

Dr. Sam, recipient of the Russell W. Bunting Award, brings precise technique to root canal therapy, giving treated teeth the best chance of long-term success.

Complete Care On Site

From the root canal to the protective crown that follows, we handle the full process at our Connelly Springs office without referring you elsewhere.

We work with your insurance so you do not have to.

Most dental insurance plans cover a significant portion of root canal treatment, often more than the cost of extraction and replacement would be. Our front desk verifies your benefits before treatment and gives you a clear estimate. Flexible payment options are available for patients without insurance.

The Process

What happens during a root canal.

The procedure is more straightforward than its reputation suggests. Here is the sequence.

STEP 1

Anesthesia

We apply topical numbing, then local anesthesia, and confirm the tooth is completely numb before starting. You feel pressure and movement, not pain.

STEP 2

Isolation

A thin rubber dental dam isolates the tooth, keeping it clean and dry and protecting you from the cleaning solutions used.

STEP 3

Cleaning the Canals

We carefully remove the infected pulp from the chamber and canals, then shape and irrigate them with antiseptic solution to eliminate bacteria.

STEP 4

Sealing

The cleaned canals are filled with gutta-percha, a rubber-like material, and sealed with cement. A filling closes the access opening.

STEP 5

Crown Placement

At a follow-up visit, a crown is placed over the treated tooth, especially a back tooth, to protect it from fracture and restore full function.

UNDERSTANDING YOUR OPTIONS

Why saving the tooth usually wins.

When a tooth is badly infected, you have two real choices, treat it with a root canal or remove it. Extraction is cheaper on the day, but it rarely ends there. A missing tooth leads to bone loss, neighboring teeth drifting, and eventually the cost of an implant, bridge, or denture to replace it.

A root canal lets you keep your own tooth. Restored with a crown, a root-canal-treated tooth can last for decades and function just like any other tooth. Your natural tooth maintains your bite and stimulates the bone in a way no replacement fully matches.

There are cases where extraction is genuinely the better path, and we will tell you honestly when that is true. But where the tooth can be saved, saving it is almost always the smarter long-term decision.

Keep Your Tooth

A restored natural tooth outperforms any replacement.

Protect Your Bite

Saving the tooth keeps neighboring teeth and bone intact.

Lower Long-Term Cost

Avoids the cost of replacing an extracted tooth later.

Is a root canal painful?

No. The procedure is done under local anesthesia and should not hurt. The pain people associate with root canals is actually the infection before treatment. The root canal removes that source of pain.

How long does a root canal take?

A front tooth with one or two canals is often done in 60 to 90 minutes. A molar with more canals may take up to two hours or a second appointment. We give you a time estimate after examining the tooth.

Do I really need a crown afterward?

For back teeth, almost always. A treated tooth becomes more brittle over time and a crown protects it from fracturing under chewing forces. Front teeth can sometimes be restored with a filling, depending on how much tooth remains.

What happens if I delay treatment?

The infection worsens and can form an abscess that spreads into the bone. Antibiotics only calm the symptoms temporarily, they cannot clear infection sealed inside the tooth. Delay usually leads to a more complex procedure or losing the tooth.

How soon can I eat afterward?

Wait until the numbness fully wears off. Until the permanent crown is placed, avoid hard or crunchy foods on the treated side.

Can a root canal fail?

Root canals succeed about 95 percent of the time. Occasionally a tooth needs retreatment if a canal was missed or the seal breaks down, and we monitor treated teeth at your regular checkups.
